Wu-wei: motivating a child to study in Chinese

With the advent of gadgets, social networks and video games, it is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to motivate their children to study. It seems that the best solution to the problem is to apply strict controls. However, pressure is not a solution. How can you inspire your child to study without stress?

This is where the Chinese philosophy of Wuwei comes to our aid, which we will discuss in this article.

What is wu wei

Wuwei is a concept that comes from Taoism, an ancient Chinese philosophy. The term literally translates to “inaction”, but its meaning goes much deeper. Wuwei means achieving harmony with the world through natural and spontaneous actions that do not contradict the nature of things.

The basic principles of wu-wei

#1 Naturalness

Actions should be simple and relaxed. You should live without excessive resistance or violence against yourself.

#2 Harmony

Wuwei presupposes agreement with the natural rhythms and laws of the universe. This allows you to achieve your goals without too much stress.

#3 Refusal to coerce

Instead of trying to control every situation, Wuwei teaches you to let go of control and trust the process.

#4 Wisdom

Using Wuwei requires wisdom and an understanding of when to act and when to step back and wait.

Wuwei in the 21st Century

In the modern context, the concept of wu wei can be interpreted as a desire to live in harmony with oneself and the world around us. This means reducing anxiety and finding ways to achieve goals without too much effort. This philosophy can be useful for people looking for balance and serenity.

Wu-wei and child motivation

The concept of wu wei may seem paradoxical in the context of motivating children. However, this is not entirely true. The principles of Chinese philosophy can be applied to create a more harmonious and natural approach to learning. Here's how wu wei can help spark a child's interest in learning:

#1 What's natural is... easy

Instead of forcing children to learn, create an environment where learning happens on its own. For example, you can watch an interesting exhibition or watch different types of plants and butterflies in nature.

#2 Curious Varvara

Give kids a chance to explore topics they're really interested in. Wuwei involves following natural inclinations, and this will undoubtedly inspire the child to continue discovering the unknown.

#3 Hurry up without rushing

Lower your expectations about grades at school. Let kids learn at their own pace. This will help them feel more comfortable and confident.

#4 In real life

Show children how knowledge can be useful in real life, for example through practical activities or projects. This will make the learning process more meaningful and motivating.

#5 I decide for myself!

Whenever possible, let children learn the way they want to learn. Let them decide for themselves what subject to start with their homework, which bibliography book to read first, and what half of the day to prepare for the weekend dictation. This contributes to the development of responsibility and internal motivation.

#6 Everything is individual

Recognize your child's unique abilities and interests. Wuwei requires respect for the nature of things, so it is important to take into account personal characteristics when organizing the educational process.
